UNILORIN ANNOUNCES CONVOCATION DATE; FORMER LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR, BABATUNDE FASHOLA TO ATTEND

The senate of the University of Ilorin has approved the programme for its 40th convocation ceremonies, scheduled to run from October 17 to 26, 2025.

The approval was given at the 306th senate meeting of the institution, chaired by the vice chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, last Thursday.

Presenting the ceremonial committee’s report, the chairman, Prof. Adegboyega Fawole, announced that the lecture would be delivered by a former Lagos State governor and ex-minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN.

He said the ceremonies would be particularly significant as they coincide with the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Prof. Fawole, who is also the deputy vice chancellor (management services), urged the support of staff and students to ensure a memorable convocation.

In his remarks, the vice chancellor called on members of senate to identify 50 outstanding research projects from the university for exhibition during the golden jubilee.

Prof. Egbewole said, “This year marks our 50th anniversary, and we cannot claim to be toddlers anymore. We must show the world what we have achieved.”

The vice chancellor, who also serves as secretary-general of the Association of West African Universities, praised the commitment of staff to the just-concluded academic session.

He expressed appreciation to heads of departments, advisers, examination officers, faculty officers and support staff for their contributions.

Prof. Egbewole also congratulated newly appointed deans and directors, while acknowledging the dedication of their predecessors.

“To our new deans, I hope you will raise the bar and improve on what has been achieved,” he said.

The vice chancellor further stressed the institution’s commitment to digital transformation, noting that August 14, 2025, would mark the end of paper memo submissions.

He said departments and faculties must make arrangements for a seamless transition to automated processes.

Reflecting on his third year in office, the vice chancellor encouraged senate members to review his mid-term report available on the university website.

“Please feel free to critique the report; that is the essence of an academic environment,” he added.
