FG RELEASE N50bn TO SETTLE ASUU, UNIVERSITY STAFFS EARNED ALLOWANCES

In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria's higher education system, the Federal Government has released N50 billion for the settlement of earned allowances to academic and non-academic staff of federal universities. This announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa.

According to a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, this financial intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s promise to prioritise education and human capital development. The statement, titled “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority,” highlights the administration’s goal of transitioning Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-driven economy.

“This intervention is not just about money—it represents President Tinubu’s deep belief in the role of our educators and the promise of our youth,” Dr. Alausa remarked. “By improving staff welfare, we are laying a solid foundation for a globally competitive education system.”

The Minister also praised the academic and non-academic unions for their cooperation and patience, noting that the current administration has maintained one of the longest uninterrupted academic calendars in recent memory. This, he said, reflects the growing trust between the government and Nigeria’s university community.

President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to ending industrial actions in Nigerian universities, stating, “The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me. Keeping our children in school is not negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”
